We Magdalene sisters love our patronesses, and while Mary Magdalene gets most of our attention, today we honor the feast of her sister (and ours), St. Martha. Martha is considered the sister of Mary and Lazarus as depicted in the Gospels. Perhaps we are most familiar with her from Luke 10 when she (perhaps with a little exasperation in her tone. Having served two years at the Basilica of Saint Mary Magdalene in Provence, Father Davidson has become an expert on this saint and her relationship to the spiritual life, as his book makes clear. The liturgical memorial of Saint Martha was begun by Franciscans, in , who celebrated her feast on 29 July, eight days after the feast of her sister, St Mary Magdalene. In Bethany (now known as El-Azariyeh, “the place of Lazarus”), one can find the tomb of Lazarus, as well as a sanctuary built upon the remains of Byzantine and Crusader.

Mary Magdalene was one of Christ’s disciples. She has been identified with several Marys in the Gospel: Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus; Mary, the sinner who washed Jesus’ feet with her tears; Mary, a woman who cared for Jesus and his apostles on their journey. St. Mary of Bethany doesn’t have her own feast day, nor does she share her sister Martha’s feast. The Eastern Rites, on the other hand, take the adulteress, penitent woman, and anointing woman to be separate persons. And, St. Mary of Bethany is distinct from St. Mary Magdalene, as evidenced on their liturgical calendar.

Sean Davidson, author of a book on her life. This book was anything but that. While it purported to center around Saint Mary Magdalene, the vast majority of the pages reiterated usually extremely well known and recounted actions of Jesus. While that was interesting, it was certainly not much new about Saint Mary Magdalene.

I was most disappointed in this s:   The evidence of Scripture points to a connection between St. Mary Magdalene and the penitent woman. Immediately after relating the story of the conversion of the woman who had been known as sinner in the city, St.

Luke tells us that a number of women followed the Lord, among whom was “Mary who is called Magdalen, out of whom seven devils were gone forth” (Luke ). The saint’s feast day is coming up July 22 and her sister, Saint Martha’s, is July Many years ago, when I was in France, a priest friend took me to a church in Tarascon.

In the crypt was the tomb of Saint Martha. "Jesus loved Martha and Mary and Lazarus." This unique statement in John's gospel tells us of the special relationship Jesus had with Martha, her sister, and her brother.

Apparently Jesus was a frequent guest at Martha's home in Bethany, a small village two miles from Jerusalem. We read of three visits in LukeJohnand John. Saint Martha and her sister and brother had the privilege of being personal friends of Jesus, whose home he went to, it seems, to relax with friends.

S Martha, Mary and their brother Lazarus were evidently close friends of : Franciscan Media. Mary of Bethany: We know little about this Mary, unless she is identified with Mary Magdalene. This is what we know: She was the sister of Martha and Lazarus and lived in Bethany, in the region of Judea (Luke39; John2).

She used to sit at Jesus’ feet to learn from Him. Legend. Mary Magdalene was of the district of Magdala, on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, where stood her families castle, called Magdalon; she was the sister of Lazarus and of Martha, and they were the children of parents reputed noble, or, as some say, royal descendants of the House of David.

Audition for Sister Act 3: Old Habits Die Hard (Sister Mary Mary Magdalene). A clear indication of its lack of historicity is that this life claims that Mary Magdalene had a sister named Martha, obviously confusing Mary Magdalene with the sisters Mary and Martha from John's Gospel.

Just in case you are a Dan Brown fan, this text does not claim that Mary Magdalene had a baby or anything like that/5(3). the life of st mary magdalene Download the life of st mary magdalene or read online books in PDF, EPUB, Tuebl, and Mobi Format.

Pseudo-Rabanus Maurus’ Life of Mary Magdalene and her sister Martha 22nd July As our namesake Mary Magdalene’s feast day is the 22 nd July, it seems appropriate to feature as Treasure of the Month one of our most important works about her: MS.

Lat. 89(1), a 15 th-century manuscript containing a medieval life of Mary Magdalene attributed to Rabanus Maurus. He spoke highly of her devotion and love of Jesus, but also referred to her as the anonymous sinner with perfume in Luke’s Gospel () and as Mary of Bethany, sister of Martha.

Life of Saint Mary Magdalene and of her sister Saint Martha. Kalamazoo, Mich.: Cistercian Publications, (OCoLC) Named Person: Mary Magdalene. So much of what we think about Mary of Magdala has to do with how her story has devolved and evolved throughout the millennia.

Apostle to the apostles. Let’s begin with Scripture. The canonical Gospels mention Mary of Magdala 12 times, more than any other woman. Her name, “of Magdala” or Mary Magdalene, comes from the town of her birth. When these women are named, Mary Magdalene is always named first, similar to Saint Peter’s position in the listing of the Apostles.

Mary Magdalene is named many more times in the Gospels than most of the Apostles themselves, signaling her importance. The Gospel of Luke relates that seven demons were driven from her (Lk. 8: 2).

Little is known about St. Mary Magdalene’s life after the Gospel accounts. According to Eastern tradition, she accompanied St. John the Apostle to Ephesus, where she died and was buried.
